Looks like it could get quite grindy for sure. Just want to save up for a new ship. I haven't even gone very far from Everate I've been playing elite from the start of the beta. In the beginning it was just grinding but now the mission have been updated and tweaked a lot and with the planetary there is more to do. Soon the passager mission and multi crew ships are coming But winging up and doing missions or just some bounty hunting is always fun, i'm only 79 ly away from you. Have settle down in Belobog. At the VR release i started a new CMDR and just now got my self back in the Vulture.

My first try today. I had a few problems installing the oculus. It kept on disconnecting and connecting the sensor. I thought it was a usb problem so I spent hours recalibrating and trying different usb 3 ports. Then I googled it and within 2 mins the problem was solved. I have a wifi antenna built in my pc and apparently the rift didn't like that and that caused the issues. After disabling the wifi antenna it worked perfectly!!!
Yes the quality isn't great yet. But oh my god this is fantastic!!! I did the alien and the dino and I liked it. Then started iracing and that's when I got really impressed! I was in the car! It felt like I was in it! Looking into chicanes and hairpins, I looked at the hands and they felt like mine. It feels real and crashing is so scary. I also feel that its easier to drive on the limit and make small corrections. I only did about 5 laps total since I wasted so much time, but shit, eau rouge is so steep, and I already got within a second of my normal pace. Did 2 more laps in the F renault at Cota and its so low on the ground. And cota is so cool, looking into the hairpins is a great feeling. It feels a bit like gokarting, but faster, but the same kind of sensation. Will do more laps tomorrow! This is great! I feel this will make me faster and its so immersive.

What's up with the shadows in iRacing? why turn them off??? Thats what the iracing setup thread says.. BTW. Assetto Corsa looks very very nice with the rift! The best experience I had so far was driving the Cobra at Zandvoort.

I read some where that you should turn of Shadow Volume when doing night races because it has a huge impact on the fps, but other then that i have all the shadows on. Still havn''t tried AC after yesterdays update but only heard good thing about it now when you can use the AA settings

Tried the Skippy last night with the Rift and that was a bunch of fun! Also tried a few heats of Rally Cross in Dirt Rally with a buddy of mine and that was a lot of fun too. Would be cool if we could fill out the rest of the cars with AI ones in these races. Still fun though with 2 cars sliding around...

So, after 4 days of playing with the Rift here is my verdict: It's a great experience, it's a nice piece of equipment and I'm sure this will be the future, especially for us in our driving simulators. My first iracing experience with the Rift was awesome, I felt like being in the car. I did a lot of practice in Mercedes at Road Atlanta for BSS last week with the rift. It took me a long time to get up to speed for various reasons which I will explain later. With my GTX 970 performance was ok, steady 90 fps, tracking was very smooth. After a few hours I got somewhat comfortable and did a race. I got in the top split which wasn't great and I qualified on the last row. I felt scared to push in the qualification. I started the race and frames dropped to 45 which was very tough. It was one of the most stressfull races I've had and I felt really uncomfortable. Something just felt wrong. I was able to do the race, I even overtook a lot of cars, but it felt wrong. A very cool experience was when a car was chasing me and made a move into the Chicane, he dove on the inside and I could see him next to me. He was faster than me on the straght and we were side by side. I could see him stay all the way on the left because he had no clue where I was. So I pushed him a bit further to the side by driving in the middle. At the brake marker I started braking, but he didn't, he overshot, ended up in the grass and dove back onto the track. But I could see him and just avoid him, overtook him and got a 2 second gap. That's VR, we're racing now, door to door. But still something was wrong, it looks wrong and the 45 fps didn't help either. I think I finished P13, but I wasn't too happy, this is undrivable and it made me very uncomfortable, it's impossible to drive and push, it looks wrong and it gave me a headache and I'll explain later why...
After fiddling with the settings I agreed that something was wrong and got fed up, a bit disappointed. I can not use the Rift for racing the way I hoped it would be. So time for something else since I read some good reviews about the latest update for Assetto Corsa. As soon as I got it to work, disabling some PP settings, but the rest is still pretty much maxed out and it just works perfect!!! This is what I expected from VR! It's just so awesome! I started in the Ferrari 458 at Monza and it was amazing! I was there, in Monza , in a Ferrari and it looks great. Playing with some AI cars is just so real, it looks amazing, pulling up to another car I wanted to wave at him. I drove the Cobra at Zandvoort and it was just pure fun! I never liked driving that car before, but now it just clicked, I was drifting, looking into corners, driving next to other cars and it looks great! So smooth and it just feels like I'm driving and I feel so in control. It's an amazing experience. I can push, I can drive the car on the limit and even slightly over the limit. I can drive the car a millimeter away from the curbs and I can look where I want to go. It's awesome. I played AC the whole weekend, full grid GT3 races is super smooth. Sometimes the frames drop a bit, but it's not a problem. I also spent 30 minutes driving around spa very slowly just sightseeing, I've been at the track many times in real life and it was great just looking around, the scale is perfect, it feels and looks awesome. The cockpits look great and the other cars look great. Yes it's not super sharp, but it looks great. Races are super much fun and fighting with other cars is just so comfortable, it's like driving a real car, now I was racing!
I tried Dirt rally for a bit and it's super much fun! They even have the menu's in VR. But the Dirt rally cockpits are not so nice and the steering wheel moves not in sync with the actual wheel which is a known problem in Dirt rally, but in VR it's a bit strange. I didn't try too long but with all the setting set very high or ultra, I got steady 90 fps and if it drops from time to time it's no problem. It's still a very difficult game but drifting, sliding and hairpins are a joy now!
I tried that lucky tale platform game very shortly and it's super much fun.
So after these great experiences I went back to iRacing. And now I understand why I had difficulties driving it. It's just not ready yet. It need updates. It's probably the anti aliasing that makes all the difference (not yet supported in VR for iracing), but driving behind another car in iRacing it's like following a couple of pixels that stick together. It's really terrible. The mirrors are pretty shit, you don't see much in the Mercedes, there is just a roll cage. The circuits look terrible without AA. I'm sure that this will change with updates, it took AC also a few months before they got the updates in, but now that looks awesome. In my opinion iRacing is not ready for doing races in VR yet, but I'm sure updates will fix this "soon". If it get's up to AC standard, I will be a very happy dude using the rift for every race. PS I did try a test with the cspec at the ring and it looks slightly better (new track) and I could just feel like being able to push and push, it just makes so much more sense when you can see where the track goes up and down and where the curbs are exactly. Before I was driving around being very scared to mess up, now I'm pushing. I also tried the DW12 at Indy and this is great aswell, you can just drive the car up to a milimeter away from the wall, you just know where the tires are. But the visiuals are just too crappy for now and the performance needs to be optimised especially driving behind other cars looks terrible. But we should be patient and wait for updates and maybe a new GPU...?
So I went back to AC and had some more very cool experiences. I did lap after lap after lap at the Nurburgring in all kinds of cars. The best experience was in the Ferrari 458 and being able to drift the whole ring, every corner was so much fun! I was never never able to do this before, but now I felt in total control, it just makes sense, the ring is so much fun.
So a short summary: The oculus is great, but iRacing needs updates before it's usable for races. AC and Dirt rally work great, even with a GTX970 and it's an amazing feeling. We just need to wait for updates in iRacing but they are working on that.

Solid read Tommy!
For the 45fps, for fun try turning off the Shadow Volumes and only have Shadow Maps on car and tracks. For now you can turn off AA too if you haven't already. What CPU do you have? You are right, something sounds fishy with dipping that low. Was it all race or only when in larger groups of cars?
We'll have to get the boys together and do up some AC online racing...

I have a Intel Core i7 4790 4-Core (8 threads) 3.6GHz (turbo 4.0Ghz) with 16 GB RAM which I don't think is the problem. I think the answer was that i minimized all programs, and after that they added this to the setup guide: 23.LOW FPS? TRY THIS SETTING David J Lord wrote: Sometimes windows can open a new dialog box or app in the background which causes the fps to drop dramatically. To fix this open up the app.ini in /documents/iracing/app.ini and set the following: reduceFramerateWhenFocusLost=0 ; set this to 0 to maintain full framerate when another program has the keyboard focus. So it's probably more stable now that I've changed that and I probably will need to detune some graphic setting anyway. I'll be looking into buying a 1070 at some point when the prices drop a bit more. Still I think, even without the frame rate dropping, iracing isn't really a good experience in VR right now and I'll be waiting for the next season build. I don't want to spend hours fiddling with setting to get a small improvement when the main problem is the game itself. I do think that when they implement AA and finetune it all I'll be doing endurance races with a huge smile on my face. Heck, I could already do a 24h Spa in AC with how that is running right now.

Cool, I wonder if it's wasn't the Oculus store window...Interesting...
Ya I agree the lack of AA in iRacing is hard on the eyes. I haven't tried an official race yet 'cause I'm scared I won't be able to be safe and clean yet. Once we get AA back I bet it's gonna rock.
We are on the edge of something new aren't we...Fun times
Blazerush is a fun lil game too, especially if you liked Micro Machines back in the day

Tommy Vandergucht what were you using before the Oculus? I ask because I'm coming from a pretty low resolution/graphic situation since I was projecting onto a large screen (130") and I was only using a GTX 760. So for me the change in resolution, etc wasn't really a big deal. Before I got my GTX 1080 I was doing races in VR at 40 fps and pretty much fine...lapping equal to my 2D times. And even though my lap times were the same, I raced much better because of everything you explained. I'm just able to judge things sooooo much easier in VR. Now I have the 1080 Strix and I run at 90 fps and I'm in love. So I'm guessing if you gave it some time you would get used to it but i understand what you're saying.
