So, I decided that... I should probably just shovel ludicrous amounts of money into one hobby, and not a bunch... Lol.
So, I ordered an aftermarket steering wheel, an adapter and extended paddles from Derek Speare, and I'm going to finalize the bill of materials for my button box and get some shit ordered.
On THAT note, if any of you guys are seriously considering wanting one of these button boxes, let me know in the next day or two so that I can do one big switch order. I can get a bunch of the switches, boards, wiring, LED's, basically anything I want to add, from Radioshack which is like 2.5 miles away lol. But the more intricate things like rotary encoders and rotary switches I'm getting from Parts Express. My current design as it stands will have enough buttons either as momentary switches, toggles, or encoders mapped to a rotary switch, to allow for mapping of all the useful buttons iRacing offers in their configuration settings. I think it was something like 121 button combinations! Maybe a little more, maybe a little less. But if you're more than 50% sure you want one, speak up now, and I will order a couple extra of the small things that will take a few days to ship to me like the rotary switches and encoders.
The final button box will unfortunately be probably in the same price bracket as something like the DSD Track Boss. I'll be doing what I can to make sure they look very nice, but budget minded and they will probably be in your typical electronics box-type enclosure. Nothing special, but nothing unnecessary. However, the Track Boss, at US$99.75, gives you 31 button combinations, all momentaries or 2 position toggles. So... if I were to sell these button boxes at $95 or something, you'd be paying for literally four Track Bosses. Lol. No offense to Derek Speare, of course. His stuff is legit, he seems to have good business ethics, and I'm not trying to corner his market, hence why I bought the paddles and adapter from him.
After I get a prototype up and running, I should be able to start looking into adding some LED's and some 7-segment displays for things like gear and mph/lap time or whatnot. But that will probably be well after I have a good, working prototype and I assume I would have to expand upon the capacity of the board with a few I/O extenders.
ANYWAY. I'll probably be buying ALL of the cars on the road side as well, as soon as I get a car payment from my brother. The rest of that will have to go towards paying my stupid college. Ugh. Fucking bills.
