I use OBS. I have it setup to stream and record at the same time, but you can also just do local recording.

Any tips on setup? I downloaded it and then went '...what?'

My CPU is an i5-4690K so these are the sweet spot settings I have found to work for me. You see the last pic you can hit start streaming or start recording. I have it setup when I hit start streaming it also starts recording in case my stream fails at some point. To just record you hit the start recording button. Also when you add sources to capture the game it saves resources by using game capture. Finally went that way after having fps issues using window capture.

Back when I was streaming, I used Dxtory to capture/record. It also sent the capture to OBS to be streamed at the same time. At the time, this was a bit more efficient than using OBS to do it all but I don't know if OBS has improved which I assume it has because that was a while back.
Dxtory also had a bit more options as far as splitting audio and some other stuff that made the captured files WAY smaller but still at 1080p quality.

Since Matt mentioned 1080 I'll say one thing about that resolution. Never stream in 1080p unless you're a partnered streamer.

When I was recording incidents from VLN I used bandicam to capture. Nothing fancy, but without buying a license videos are just 10min max and you have a bandicam logo on the top of the captured video. I will have to fiddle around with OBS, that's next on my list to do in order to prepare for streaming ^^

Christian Challiner Stephan Spantig and everyone with an Nvidea card, the easiest way to record a video is use software you have already installed If you open the Nvidea Geforce experience program (which you use to update drivers for your videocard), on the top right you have a tab called shadowplay. It's very easy. If you click ''mode'' there is even a tab to stream to twitch, but it's 720P max and you don't have any fancy overlays. But this program is perfect to record a video. Make sure you go through the settings under the quality tab (it's easy!), the higher the bitrate, the better the quality, but the bigger the file. I always have Shadowplay on, because you can also see a counter with the current fps (doesn't work in iracing because they have their own fps counter, but it works for all other games) and if I want to record a video I only have to press Alt+F9. For streaming I think it's better to use OBS, because you can also add some fancy layers. Make sure you have anti-cheat compatibility hooking enabled since iracing now uses anti-cheat software. There are many many videos on youtube on how to get OBS to stream to twitch, or even youtube. @paultds and me spend almost a whole day getting it to work (well we tried to get live tire temps to work, but we ended up with streaming to twitch haha), but it's actually very easy if you do it in the right order and know where to look, so I'll help you. So I suggest to first get a normal stream going with OBS to twitch (youtube has many tutorials). I don't know much about settings in OBS, probably Josh knows more in his post above. Once that works you can try do some overlays, which is more complicated. But if you click on this link: ir-apps.kutu.ru/#/ (which is related to this topic members.iracing.com/jforum/posts/list/3244571.page) and follow it step by step it'll work. A third step would be to stream to twitch and youtube at the same time which is currently not possible with OBS itself. But with this website restream.io/ it is possible and easy. Once you have it all set up, you only have to open OBS, click stream and your streams with overlays will start in both twitch and youtube. I found that it didn't hurt FPS at all, and in OBS you have to select a maximum upload speed (which determines the quality of the stream) so you can set this lower than your actual upload speed and have no problems with lag at all! However I noticed some extra tearing/stuttering and sometimes the screen went black for a nanosecond and I even though I had more input lag... So I won't use it for BES races just yet haha and might need to fiddle with the settings a bit more.

Thanks Tommy Vandergucht I have never really had a good look at that with the Nvidia program. I will have to look into that.

This seems to be an old thread to reply to, but I'm just wondering, how big your files are after recording locally? I use OBS too and I will have to try out your settings here if this can work for me. We have the same processor so I thought if this works for you, this will work for me too. I did some tweaking a few days ago, but honestly I do not know what I'm doing. I find the quality to be a little bit on the poor side and I copied someone else's settings from youtube. I usually get around 6.6GB on a 26 minutes video, so my hard drive is filling up fast. Then after doing some kamikaze tweaks, I started getting a warning saying "high encoding" and my videos are what you'd call a slideshow. I just hoped my files can be smaller and in decent quality, but if not, I'll just have to deal with large files and in somewhat low quality playable videos.

Hey Neil. There's one big difference from when I first posted my settings. I now run a dedicated stream PC with an i7 4790K. I know if you're just doing recording locally you can bump up the bitrate for better quality. Right now I run my max bitrate at 2500 and have it downscaled to 720p from 1080p and my x264 preset is set to fast. I also have started streaming in 60fps. Before I started streaming I would record in 1080p without the downscaling which would make my file sizes around double what they are now. Some examples of my file sizes as it will fluctuate a bit depending on what you're recording.
1 hour = 1.2GB 3 hours 41 minutes = 4.3GB 2 hours 54 minutes = 3.4GB
These examples are from this month.
If you want I can put a few of my files up on the google drive so you can see what the quality looks like as the raw file will be the best way to see.

Sure that will be nice... I managed to bring back my old settings, but still too large files to keep around inside my almost full hard drive. I think I'm gonna have to buy a new drive. I record full whatever is on screen, I did tried to downscale before and yes it cut a bit in file size. I think I should just downscale to 720p. thanks for the info man. really appreciate it. And yes I only record locally, as I will get a big fat "zero" in viewer count if I try to stream my races somewhere... (rofl) pointless for me
